Where Can You Bet Player Props?
Player props, bets on an individual athlete's stats, are the fastest-growing part of U.S. betting and the part regulators watch most closely. Here is where they are legal, the limits on college and in-game props, and the options in states without sportsbooks.
Every state with legal sports betting allows player props on pro athletes; we found no state that bans them. College player props are another story: 15 betting states ban them, and many more allow them only for out-of-state schools. In states without sportsbooks, fantasy pick'em apps and some prediction markets offer player-stat contests and contracts. See every state's rules.

What counts as a player prop
A player prop is a bet on one athlete's performance rather than the game's result: a quarterback's passing yards, a guard's points, a pitcher's strikeouts or whether a player scores a touchdown. Sportsbooks also offer them live during games, and same-game parlays stack several props together.
Pro player props: legal everywhere betting is
We found no state that bans player props on professional athletes. A New York bill (A9636) would ban all prop bets, but it has not passed. Each regulator still approves which bet types books can offer, so menus differ by state and by app.
College player props
15 states with legal betting ban player props on college athletes or take no college bets at all, including Arizona, Colorado, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia, which never allowed them. Louisiana, Maryland, Ohio and Vermont dropped them after the NCAA asked, and in January 2026 the NCAA asked every gaming commission to follow; Indiana and Missouri said no. Where props are allowed, many states bar them for in-state schools. New for 2026: Kentucky banned under props on athletes in games involving Kentucky teams, and Washington banned props on athletes at its own schools. See the full college prop rules by state.
Indiana allows college player props before a game but not live, and its Gaming Commission rejected the NCAA's request to ban them in September 2026.
New limits after the 2025 betting scandals
After federal indictments tied to NBA games and a pitch-rigging scandal in baseball in 2025, leagues and sportsbooks tightened prop betting. On Nov. 10, 2025, MLB and operators covering more than 98% of the market capped bets on individual pitches at $200 and kept them out of parlays. The NBA had sportsbooks drop markets on missed free throws, fouls and turnovers, and its memo for the 2026-27 season bars same-player under parlays, opening-tip bets, 'to miss' shot props and unders on players projected for under 12 minutes. Ohio's regulator weighed banning player-specific live bets in 2025 and dropped the plan after MLB acted.
No state has enacted a ban on pro player props or micro bets, as far as we can find, but bills are moving: a New Jersey micro-betting ban cleared a committee in 2026, and a Pennsylvania bill filed in October 2026 targets micro bets and same-game parlays with player props.
Player props without a sportsbook
Fantasy pick'em. Apps such as PrizePicks, Underdog and Betr Picks let you pick whether players go over or under stat projections. They operate in more than 30 states under fantasy laws, not sports betting laws, though California allows only peer-to-peer versions and PrizePicks has left Michigan, New York and Florida. See our daily fantasy guide.
Prediction markets. Kalshi has listed NFL player contracts, such as touchdown scorers and yardage, since the 2025 season, Polymarket US lists some player props, and ProphetX offers player contracts too. Kalshi and Polymarket US do not list college football player props. A CFTC rule proposed in June 2026, not yet final, would likely bar in-game player-action contracts. Availability varies by state: Kalshi's sports contracts are not offered in Michigan, Nevada or Utah, Polymarket US is blocked in Nevada and has sports off in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan and Tennessee, and about 20 states are in court with these platforms.
Player Props FAQ
Are player props legal in my state?
If sports betting is legal in your state, props on professional athletes are too; we found no state that bans them. College player props are banned in 15 betting states and limited in many others.
Which states ban college player props?
Arizona, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, and Virginia ban them, and Oregon takes no college bets at all. Our college prop rules page lists every state's details.
Can I bet on pitch-by-pitch props?
Yes in states that offer them, but since November 2025 major sportsbooks cap single-pitch bets at $200 and exclude them from parlays.
Can I bet player props in Texas or California?
Not at a sportsbook, since neither state has legal sports betting. Fantasy pick'em apps operate in Texas, California allows only peer-to-peer fantasy, and prediction markets list some player contracts in both.
Are DFS pick'em apps the same as player prop bets?
They look similar, but pick'em apps operate under state fantasy sports laws as contests, not as sportsbook bets, and several states have restricted or banned them.
Does Kalshi offer player props?
Kalshi has listed NFL player contracts since the 2025 season but does not list college football player props. It is a CFTC-regulated exchange, not a sportsbook.
