Where Super Bowl betting is legal

Licensed sportsbooks in 31 states and Washington, D.C. take Super Bowl bets online through apps, and most of those states also have retail sportsbooks. In Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin, betting is legal only in person at a casino or retail sportsbook.

Apps check where you are, not where you live. You can bet from inside any legal state's borders, but not from a state where betting is illegal, even with an account you opened somewhere else. The minimum age is 21 in most states and on most apps, and 18 in a few (see the table).

No legal betting where you live? Your options

Alabama, Alaska, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah have no legal sports betting. Adults in many of them still have legal ways to play the Super Bowl.

Prediction markets. Kalshi, Polymarket US and ProphetX are federally regulated exchanges that list contracts on the game. They are not sportsbooks: you trade yes-or-no contracts with other users, priced from 1 to 99 cents. Availability varies by state. Kalshi's sports contracts are not offered in Michigan, Nevada or Utah, Polymarket US is blocked in Nevada and has sports off in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan and Tennessee, and about 20 states are in court with these platforms. See our prediction markets guide.

Fantasy pick'em. Apps such as PrizePicks, Underdog and Betr Picks run player-stat contests in more than 30 states, though not everywhere. California allows only peer-to-peer versions after a 2025 attorney general opinion, and PrizePicks has left Michigan, New York and Florida. See our daily fantasy guide.

Sweepstakes sportsbooks. Social apps that use sweepstakes coins operate in some states, but a growing list of states ban or restrict them. See our sweepstakes guide.

Super Bowl props: what each state allows

Every state with legal betting allows standard player and team props on the game, such as passing yards, touchdown scorers and total points. We found no state that bans NFL player props. Novelty props are different: each regulator approves a list of allowed bets, and anything not on the list is off the board.

Before Super Bowl LX, the three largest sportsbooks offered the coin toss in about 21 states plus D.C. and MVP bets in about 27 states plus D.C., but the Gatorade color in only seven: Illinois, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, Oregon, West Virginia and Wyoming, according to a Covers survey. Bets on the national anthem and the halftime show were essentially unavailable at regulated books. Ohio's regulator will not approve coin flips, Gatorade color or performer bets for any event, and Missouri's commission turned down the coin toss and the Gatorade color for its first Super Bowl while allowing MVP bets.

Prediction markets are not bound by state prop lists. Kalshi said it handled more than $1 billion in Super Bowl LX trading, including $275 million on halftime, commercial and celebrity markets.

How much America bets on the Super Bowl

The American Gaming Association estimated $1.76 billion in legal sportsbook bets on Super Bowl LX in February 2026, up 26.6% from its estimate for the year before, not counting prediction markets. Nevada's sportsbooks took $133.8 million, their lowest Super Bowl total since 2016. A Marist poll found 20% of U.S. adults planned to bet, make a friendly wager or join a pool on the game.

Prediction markets ran alongside: DeFi Rate counted about $1.63 billion of Kalshi and Polymarket volume tied to Super Bowl LX, though most of Polymarket's share came from season-long championship futures. More numbers are on our sports betting statistics page.

Super Bowl squares and office pools

A free squares board or pool with no entry fee is legal everywhere. Once money changes hands, it depends on your state. Analyses citing the American Gaming Association describe the typical paid office pool as illegal in 37 states, and no state allows a pool run for profit.

Some states carve out small social games. Washington allows a 100-square board at up to $1 a square with all the money paid out as prizes. Connecticut and Colorado exempt bets made as part of a bona fide social relationship. Texas law gives a defense for private games where no one takes a cut and every player has the same chance. Montana allows sports pools only when a licensed operator runs them.

Betting on the game from California

The game is in Inglewood, but California has not legalized sports betting: voters rejected both sports betting measures on the 2022 ballot, and the state has not legalized it since. Fans at SoFi Stadium cannot place a legal sportsbook bet in California. Nevada, Arizona and Oregon border the state and all have legal sports betting. California adults can use prediction markets, and fantasy contests there are limited to peer-to-peer formats. See our California guide.
